Our Philosophy

Madison Park Cooperative Preschool's (MPCP) goal is to establish an environment that enables children to have a fun first experience in a school setting where they can feel confident as they begin to master social and academic readiness skills. At the same time, MPCP is providing a setting where parents can observe child behavior, discuss parenting concerns and practice new guidance techniques. Parents act as assistant teachers and learn to plan and manage developmentally appropriate activities for children and the parents manage the day-to-day operations of the school. MPCP strives to be sensitive to the cultural and individual needs of each member family and the creative, social, emotional, intellectual and physical needs of each individual child.

MPCP believes that successful learning requires making choices, gathering information from those experiences and evaluating outcomes. MPCP believes this environment develops positive self-esteem. The MPCP classroom provides developmentally appropriate materials and its programs focus on the love of learning. A safe physical environment is structured to challenge fine and gross motor skills, encourage the development of self-help skills, and facilitate experimentation. MPCP offers an atmosphere of trust and openness allowing children learn to express emotions and use materials in acceptable and creative ways.

MPCP believes children benefit from a diverse social setting and therefore promotes a multicultural environment that teaches respect and understanding of various backgrounds. The curriculum and classroom environment are developed in ways that will foster greater multicultural sensitivity and understanding.

MPCP advocates positive methods of discipline that help children develop internal controls rather than a dependency on external sources. Behavior is managed by carefully arranging the schedule and the environment as well as through active listening, modeling appropriate behaviors, and verbal problem solving. Inappropriate behavior is discouraged through redirection and guidance.

MPCP has chosen to be a parent/child study laboratory affiliated with the Washington Community College Parent Education Program. As an affiliate, MPCP is required to provide a safe, age-appropriate, and supportive atmosphere where parents and children learn together.
